The series is built on arranged marriage between Chicago and New York families. Bound by Honor is where the genre’s modern template was set: Aria Scuderi, from one of Chicago’s leading mob families, was promised at fifteen to Luca Vitiello, the oldest son of the head of the New York Cosa Nostra, to keep peace between them, and the book opens as the wedding she has dreaded arrives.
Should you start with Luca Vitiello or Bound by Honor? #
Reilly’s page lists Luca Vitiello first, and that is the order given above. It is told from Luca’s point of view, and it covers ground that Bound by Honor also covers from Aria’s side.
Plenty of readers still start with Bound by Honor instead, for a straightforward reason: it was published first, in 2014, and it was written to be a first book. Reading Aria’s version first preserves the mystery around Luca that the book is built on. Reading Luca’s first gives you his interiority from the start and makes him less frightening.
Neither choice breaks anything. If you have no strong feeling, start with Bound by Honor.
Where do the Camorra Chronicles fit? #
The Camorra Chronicles move to a Las Vegas Camorra organization and share characters and history with Born in Blood. Twisted Loyalties opens the series with Fabiano Scuderi, raised to follow his father as consigliere of the Chicago Outfit until his father abandoned him, who fought his way up to Enforcer of the Las Vegas Camorra, and Leona, who is trying to build a decent life away from her mother’s addiction.
Fabiano is a Scuderi, which is why the recommended order sends you to Las Vegas after Bound by Love. Reading the Camorra books cold is possible, but the family connections land better with the Born in Blood books behind you.

What is Sins of the Fathers? #
Sins of the Fathers is the next-generation series, following the children of the couples from the earlier books. That makes it the one part of the order you genuinely should not read early, since the entire point is that you already know the parents.
It runs By Sin I Rise: Part One, By Sin I Rise: Part Two and By Virtue I Fall. Note that the first two parts are halves of one story rather than separate books with separate couples.
Publication order or reading order? #
Reading order, in this case. The two differ because Reilly wrote across series in parallel and later published Luca Vitiello as a retelling and companion. The recommended order exists to keep character introductions and reveals in the sequence that makes sense, which publication order no longer does.
The one argument for publication order is spoiler management in the other direction: later books sometimes reveal information about earlier couples. That is a small effect compared with meeting a character’s backstory after their payoff.
Do you have to read all of them? #
No. Each book centers on its own couple and resolves that couple’s story, so you can stop at any point. Three reasonable stopping places:
- After Bound by Honor. You get the complete arranged marriage story that made the series famous.
- After Bound by Love. This closes the main Born in Blood arc before the Camorra detour.
- After Twisted Cravings. Everything except the next generation.
What you lose by stopping is the network effect. Reilly seeds future couples into earlier books, so the pleasure of the later ones comes partly from having met those people already. Readers who like that structure tend to read the whole thing; readers who want one good arranged-marriage novel are well served by book one alone.
